Before learning the piano, Nathanael's first instruments were accordion, ukelele and guitar.

Whilst at high-school, he wanted to learn the cello, but there were no cellos left for hire, so he took the opportunity of learning viola and double bass, and participated in the school orchestras and chamber groups.

He later played occasionally as an orchestral bassist. As big fan of Bluegrass music, he enjoyed playing bass alongside other Bluegrass and Country Gospel musicians.

In the 1995 photo above, Nathanael plays bass next to cellist Mike Clayton - who would eventually serve as the sound technician for the majority of his future piano recordings.
